National Adoption Day news for planners and partners

November 13, 2012 · News

Can you believe it? National Adoption Day is this Saturday! We are very excited that more than 4,500 children in foster care will finally celebrate their “one day” and find their forever families.

Poll reveals attitudes toward adoption of teens in foster care

The National Adoption Day Coalition commissioned Harris Interactive to conduct an online survey about adopting a teen from U.S. foster care. Of the 2,339 individuals surveyed in September, 18 percent would adopt a teen (age 13 to 18) from U.S. foster care; 58 percent would not consider it; and 24 percent are not sure. The poll results were weighted to reflect the U.S. adult population. Click here for more information.

The National Adoption Day Coalition survey found that the most significant obstacles to the adoption of teenagers from foster care are the personal dynamics of adults, including age, economic/housing issues, and the presence of children in the household. As the U.S. population ages, adults are probably looking toward retirement and grandchildren, not expanding their own families through adoption (of younger or older children).

The survey also indicates that women age 18 to 34, and unmarried or never married individuals, are most open to adopting a teenager (age 13 to 18) from U.S. foster care.

Every child deserves a nurturing family and a safe home. Thank you for your efforts to raise awareness of the more than 100,000 children waiting in U.S. foster care for permanent and loving families.

Leverage the voices of your community

It’s not too late to submit a letter to the editor of your local newspaper to share the importance of National Adoption Day, along with details about your community’s celebration. By doing so, you will help raise awareness about children in foster care and will multiply the efforts of other cities across the country to build support and momentum for National Adoption Day. A template letter-to-editor is in the event organizers toolkit.

Free portrait gift certificate for families

CPI Corp. has generously donated 1,000 portrait gift certificates for families who adopt on National Adoption Day. CPI is a leading portrait studio operator in North America, with locations in many Sears and Walmart stores. The free portrait gift certificates are available on a first-come, first-served basis. Share your event results

We’d love to know the results of your event! Please remember to update your event registration with the number of children adopted. If you have high resolution photos from your event, along with a release form from the family, please share with us for consideration to be featured on the National Adoption Day website. Send photos and release forms to Yvonne Pentz at ypentz@paulwerth.com.

One Day Project

On just one day, you can make a difference … you can help a child find a home. The National Adoption Day Coalition created the One Day Project to give hope to children waiting in foster care and encourage others to adopt.

Please share a short video about your adoption story, a few words of encouragement, or why you support National Adoption Day. The video doesn't need to be fancy (no longer than one minute) – a video taken with a cell phone or laptop will be just fine. After you create the video, upload it to YouTube or Vimeo and share the link with us through the video submission page.

Watch the videos submitted by a former foster youth and a social worker as they share what National Adoption Day means to them. Every child deserves a loving family. Every child is adoptable. Click here to share your video of encouragement.
